Desde la superficie de la Tierra podemos observar dos tipos de eclipses: eclipses de Sol y eclipses de Luna. Un eclipse de Sol ocurre cuando la Luna nueva se mueve entre la Tierra y el Sol y la sombra de la Luna es proyectada sobre la superficie terrestre (como se puede ver en la posici\u00f3n A de la Luna). Todos los meses la Luna pasa entre el Sol y la Tierra, es la fase que conocemos como Luna Nueva, (posiciones A y D de la Luna, por este motivo no se ve desde la Tierra). Sin embargo, como la \u00f3rbita de la Luna no est\u00e1 en el mismo plano que la \u00f3rbita de la Tierra, sino que est\u00e1 inclinada respecto al plano que forman la \u00f3rbita terrestre con el Sol en el centro, la alineaci\u00f3n no siempre es perfecta, pero cuando esto sucede se produce un eclipse de Sol. Esto puede ocurrir entre dos y cinco veces al a\u00f1o, siendo dos veces lo m\u00e1s com\u00fan. Visto desde la Tierra, hay tres tipos de eclipses solares: parcial, total y anular (como se muestra en A, B y C, respectivamente). Un eclipse total s\u00f3lo puede ser observado como tal desde una regi\u00f3n muy limitada de la Tierra. Las regiones en las que ser\u00e1 visible el eclipse total son aquellas alcanzadas por la umbra.*<\/p>\n
La umbra de la Luna, que es la parte m\u00e1s oscura de la sombra donde la luz del Sol es completamente bloqueada por ella, se mueve hacia el Este a unos 2200 km\/h. La forma de esa regi\u00f3n sobre la Tierra es un cintur\u00f3n estrecho de no m\u00e1s de 269 kil\u00f3metros de ancho por unos 16 mil kil\u00f3metros de largo. En las regiones fuera de esa franja, y dentro de la penumbra (regi\u00f3n de sombra d\u00e9bil entre la luz y la total oscuridad), se puede ver un eclipse parcial de Sol.<\/p>\n
Un eclipse total tiene 5 fases: inicio de la fase parcial, inicio de la fase total, m\u00e1ximo, fin de la fase total y fin de la fase parcial. Desde el inicio de la fase parcial hasta el inicio de la fase total, el porcentaje de ocultamiento del Sol va aumentando hasta llegar a la totalidad, mientras que luego del fin de la fase total empieza a ser descubierto paulatinamente.
